Virginia Tint Law Overview
When tinting your car windows in Virginia, it’s important to follow the rules to stay legal. Here’s what you need to know:
Sedans:
Front Side Windows: Must let at least 50% of light through.
Rear Side Windows & Back Windshield: Must let at least 35% of light through.
Windshield: Tint is allowed above the AS-1 line only.
SUVs & Trucks:
Front Side Windows: Must let at least 50% of light through.
Rear Side Windows & Back Windshield: No restrictions on tint darkness.
Windshield: Tint is allowed above the AS-1 line only.
Important Rule:The 3rd brake light must remain un-tinted to ensure visibility for other drivers.
Reflectivity:Front and back side window tint reflectivity is capped at 20%, regardless of VLT darkness.
